Visual Awareness Workshop
In Association with Gloucestershire County Association for the Blind
Sight loss affects 1 in 2 of people over 85 and 1 in 5 of those between 75 and 84
The aims of this practical, interactive and informal workshop are:
-Raise awareness of different types of sight impairment – using simulation spectacles to experience the effects of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, cataracts.
-Increase understanding of the effects of sight impairment such as the higher risk of falls, isolation, depression, loss of confidence.
-Provide guidance for the early recognition of sight impairment. Residents may be walking more hesitantly or shuffling, have difficulty in locating objects, appear more clumsy, have discontinued usual activities.
-Suggest ways in which residents can be supported and helped including the physical environment, moving around safely, placement of food and drinks, contrast in colours and lighting and many more hints and tips.
-Consider ways to improve oral and written communications with residents – big and bold for written materials and suggestions to help improve oral communications
